Funeral services for Elmer A. Martel, age 90, of 400 John
Street, Ogdensburg, will be held on Tuesdsay, March 2, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at
Notre Dame Church with Rev. F. James Shurtleff officiating.Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery in the
spring.Calling hours will be at the
convenience of the family.Arrangements
are with Frary Funeral Home.Mr. Martel passed
away on Friday, February 26, 2010 at his home with his family at his side.
Mr. Martel is survived by his loving wife, Patricia; one
son, Timothy Martel and his wife, Connie, of Oregon; one daughter, Melanie Cole
and her husband, Mike, of Ogdensburg; three sisters, Pearl LeBell of Syracuse,
Ester Reiley, of Elmont, NY and Lorraine LaRose of Ogdensburg; four
grandchildren, Timothy C. Martel, of Washington, Melissa Y. Martel, of
Washington, Cassandra M. Peck of Rouses Point and Alexander M. Cole of
Ogdensburg; and several nieces and nephews.He was predeceased by one brother, Norm Martel.
Mr. Martel was born on October 27, 1919 in Ogdensburg, the
son of Elzear and Lulu Charlebois Martel.He graduated from OFA in 1938.Upon graduation he went to work for Algonquin Paper in Ogdensburg (which
later became Diamond International).He
left Diamond International to enlist in the US Navy.In 1943, he served in the Pacific Theater and
attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer and saw action in Guam and
Okinawa.After his discharge from the
Navy, he returned to work for Diamond International.In 1962, he was named Plant Manager of the
Ogdensburg Plant.In 1978, after the
closing of the Ogdensburg Plant he was transferred as Manager of the
Plattsburgh Plant.He retired in 1982.
Mr. Martel married Patricia Denny of Heuvelton on October
22, 1974.They later renewed their vows
on October 19, 1995 at Notre Dame Church with Rev. Ivan Bouyea
officiating.He served as a Director on
the St. Lawrence National Bank Board.Mr.
Martel was a member and Past President of the Ogdensburg Rotary Club as well as
the Ogdensburg Country Club.He was also
a life member of the Ogdensburg Elks Club where he served on various
committees.Memberships also included
Lodge #705 Royal Order of Arch Masons, Media Temple Shrine Club of Watertown
and the Royal Order of Jesters.His
hobbies included golf, wood carving, hunting, fishing and playing poker.
Donations may be made in his memory to Notre Dame Heritage
Fund and Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley.

Pat, Mel and family, how sad I was to read of Elmer's passing. I have drifted from Ogdensburg but think of you folks often. My prayers are with you over the loss of husband/dad, may you know that Jesus will give you comfort at this time.
I hope and pray you are all doing well with the loss of this dear man. I have vague memories of Norm as a young child . He was always so kind to my sister Barbara and me.
