Gary J. Jarvis, retired Sheriff of St. Lawrence County, passed away on Thursday, February 14, 2019, at his home. His wife Nancy, son Michael and daughter SueEllen were with him at the time of his passing. Graveside services will be held in the Spring at Notre Dame Cemetery at a later date and time to be announced by the family. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Frary Funeral Home, Ogdensburg.
Gary is survived by his wife of fifty-one years, Nancy; his son, G. Michael Jarvis, his daughter, SueEllen Jarvis Bouchard and her husband, Alan and two grandchildren, Ethan L. Bouchard and Lauren Mae Bouchard.
Gary was born on November 15, 1944 the son of Jeremiah and Ruth Fleming Jarvis, Ogdensburg, NY. Gary was married to Nancy LaRock, July 15, 1967, at Notre Dame Church with Msgr. A. D. Charbonneau officiating.
Gary graduated from St. Mary’s Academy class of 1962. Sheriff Jarvis was appointed Deputy Sheriff, June 13, 1969, by then Sheriff Ceylon A. (Lefty) Allen. Jarvis had completed the Frederick A. Moran course at St. Lawrence University. In 1979, then Elect Sheriff Keith K. Knowlton appointed him Under-Sheriff, a position he held for twenty (20) years. In December 1980, Gary graduated from the FBI Academy, 123rd session, Quantico, Virginia. He was elected Sheriff in November of 1999. He served at the Sheriff’s Office for thirty-eight years.
Sheriff Jarvis had a long and successful career with the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff held several positions within the department. The one he was so honored and proud of being elected Sheriff in November of 1999. He served in that capacity until his retirement in December 2007.
Gary was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 258, Msgr. AD Charbonneau Council, Ogdensburg, New York. Gary also served as Town Councilman for the town of Lisbon, New York, was member of the New York State Sheriff’s Association, St. Lawrence County Republican Party Committeeman, and a long time member of the Ogdensburg Lions Club. For the past few years Gary was an assistant at Frary Funeral Home.
The Jarvis family would like to thank Dr. Alka Srivastava, MD, the nurses of Richard E. Winter Cancer Treatment Center and the ICU Unit of Claxton Hepburn Medical Center for the professional care Gary received during his illness. Also the kindness and thoughtfulness from the priests that visited Gary. Thanks to the many friends who spent time with him at home, while in the hospital and who sent cards and well wishes.
