Marion S. Houmiel

Funeral services of Marion Smith Houmiel, age 97, of Ogdensburg, NY, will be held on Friday, December 28, 2018 at Frary Funeral Home at 1:30PM with Deacon Mark Lalonde officiating. Burial will be in Ogdensburgh Cemetery in the Spring. Calling hours will be held from 11:00 to 1:00 on Friday, December 28, 2018, at Frary Funeral Home. Mrs. Houmiel passed away on Wednesday night, December 26, 2018 at Riverledge Nursing Home surrounded by her loving family.

Marion is survived by her two sons, H. Wayne Houmiel and his wife, Barbara of Ogdensburg and Englewood, FL and Jeffrey H. Houmiel and his wife, Suzanne, of Lisbon, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She is predeceased by two brothers, Albert Smith and Walter Smith.

Marion was born on March 8, 1921, in Plattsburgh, NY, the daughter of Harlan and Julia Schryver Smith. She graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy in 1939. Marion married Hubert, her high school sweetheart, on November 21, 1940, at Notre Dame Church with Monsignor Charbonneau officiating. He predeceased her on January 5, 1993. Marion first went to work for St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center as a secretary for Dr. Dory for six years and later became employed by ACCO International Brands for five years. Mrs. Houmiel later retired as a secretary from the New York State Department of Transportation after ten years of employment.

Marion enjoyed running Houmiel Camps with her husband Hubert and spending time with friends and family.  She was an avid Yankee’s fan, a past member of the American Legion and very active with the Centennial Terrace Association.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marion’s memory to the St. Lawrence Valley Chapter of Hospice, 6805 US-11, Potsdam, NY 13676 or Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad, PO BOX 172, Ogdensburg, NY 13669.

    What a beautiful, gracious lady. Always greeted my Mom with a big smile and such kind words. She was some one I looked up to for the way she embraced life and friendships. I remember a smile on her face that lit up the room.
