A remembrance celebration of life service for Robert Eugene Simmons
of Heuvelton, NY will be held on August 23, 2008 at the AmVets in Heuvelton
from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Burial will be
held on Sunday, August 24 at 11:00 a.m. in the family plot at Purmont Cemetery
in DePeyster, NY with Military Honors with a fly over by the United States Air
Force. Arrangements are with Frary
Mr. Simmons is survived by his mother, Rita Simmons, of Heuvelton
NY; three brothers, Harry Simmons and his wife, Bev, of North Pitcher, NY,
Richard (Butch) Simmons and his wife, Mary, of Heuvelton, NY, Wayne Simmons and
his wife, Virginia, of Smyrna, NY; three sisters, Adell Thompson and her
husband, Bill, of Santa Clara, CA, Debra Sheppard of Heuvelton, NY, Cherie
Stevens and her husband, Randy, of Hamilton, NY; a brother-in-law, Rob Morgan
of Locke, NY; several nieces and nephews; a very special friend, Ina T. Bell,
and his best friend, Robert (Mike) Ford of Denver, Colorado, whom he served in
the USAF with. He is predeceased by a
sister, Joan Morgan, in 1985.
Robert Eugene Simmons was born on November 25, 1951 in
Ogdensburg, the son of Earl and Rita Rayburn Simmons. He attended Heuvelton Central School for most
of his school years. He graduated from DeRuyter Central School in 1969. After graduation, he worked for Smith Corona
Corp in Cortland, NY. He loved Stock Car
racing and drove along with his father Earl and brother Richard (Butch) Simmons. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in
1970. On March 29, 1972, while fighting
a mission during the Vietnam War, the plane he was on, an AC130 Spectre, was
shot down by enemy forces over Laos. He
has been listed as MIA/POW since that date.
